Thandie Newton

Thandie Newton is the black Goddess who we feature in our Afro Caribbean Hair blog today. Thandie was born in London but her mother is a Zimbabwean health care worker who is also a Shona princess and her father an English lab technician. She is another beautiful black star who loves and uses hair extensions. The name Thandiwe means "beloved" in Ndebele, Zulu, Xhosa or Swazi and is pronounced tan-dee in English.
Thandie made her film debut in 'Flirting' in 1991 and appeared in 'Interview With The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles' in 1994. She gained international recognition in 'Jefferson in Paris', which led to her being cast in 'Beloved' in 1998, in which she played the title character alongside co-stars Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover. She played the female lead Nyah Hall in the film 'Mission Impossible: II' and later starred in 'ER' and 'Crash', for which she won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress. Other starring movie roles included 'Norbit', with Eddie Murphy, and 'Run Fat Boy Run', alongside Simon Pegg. In 2008 she played Condoleezza Rice in 'W', Oliver Stone's biograpahy of George W Bush.
Married with two daughters, she visited a poverty stricken part of Mali in 2008 and described it as a 'humbling experience'. She also takes an interest in environmental issues.
